We rarely, if ever, called the IRA bombings "Catholic" terrorism

The label of Catholic terror was never used about the IRA

London is another country.

London is another country. Whilst in and of England, it also soars above middle England in the fluxing energy of its social, artistic, entertainment, cultural, sub-cultural, ethnic, political, intellectual and business worlds, the swagger (and occasional grand fuck-ups) of its metropolitan ambitions and the easy inclusiveness that is, paradoxically, a hallmark of even the most bigoted Londoner. If racial, cultural and class diversity irritate you, you're in the wrong place. Even the racists give up. It's pointless. London defines itself through diversity. For instance, there is nothing like the racial tension you experience in New York.
_
There are those inverse snobs who hate it. Very often, these people are from lesser cities throughout England; or they're bigots who instinctively feel ill-at-ease in the cultural fuzziness that is Zones 1 and 2. The usual list of moans: "dirty, expensive, exhausting, crowded, sticky hot in summer, full of crime, tacky, rip off, moan, moan".
_
Away with such people! As Wordsworth suggests, their souls are dull.
_
Ken Livingstone captured London's appeal in his address today:
_
I said yesterday to the International Olympic Committee that the city of London is the greatest in the world because everybody lives side by side in harmony. ... In the days that follow ... people from around the world will arrive in London to become Londoners and to fulfil their dreams and achieve their potential. They choose to come to London, as so many have come before because they come to be free, they come to live the life they choose, they come to be able to be themselves.

子どもたちに対する配慮が示されたアドバイス――子供向けBBCサイトから。

Worried about the news?

Hello Everyone,
Lots of you are talking about what happened in London on Thursday. Things like this make a lot of people nervous. Most of us worry about ourselves and our loved ones; especially if we are separated from them. Being concerned is okay, and talking about it helps; just try not to freak yourselves out by worrying yourselves sick! That happens when you don't know what's happening and you make up scary stories in your head to fill the gaps.
_
While sometimes these things DO happen, we have the best people in the world trying to make sure it doesn't. When it DOES happen, they are on hand to sort things out as quickly and safely as possible. While it can still be scary, the chances of things affecting YOU are small; so try not to worry too much. If you're nervous, talk about it with your parents or others that you trust. If you have been directly affected by it, seek help and support from loved ones. In the meantime, stay sane by following some of Newsround's advice about bad news.
_
