'New Wave' Labour MPs call on Blair to change direction

New Wave Labour

1. Inequality matters! We should aim to create a society where social solidarity and fairness are recognised as essential to the sustainable creation of wealth.

2. Markets have limits. They are good servants but poor masters. Neo- Liberalism is the ideological antithesis to Democratic Socialism.

3. Collective provision has a role in maximising human potential. Governments must ensure that rampant individualism does not lead to worse solutions for all. This is especially true in balancing development with sustainable environmental protection.

4. Globalisation can work for the benefit of humankind but only with the overthrow of market fundamentalist control in the international institutions including the IMF, the WTO and the World Bank and with peace, stability and fair trade. The international institutions need to be genuinely democratised.

5. Collective security is a vital component of the post September 11th world. This will be safeguarded by a reformed and effective UN and not by neo-colonial US adventures. Britain's role is to be a model member of a reformed UN and champion the world's poor.

6. Democracy means more than intermittent voting. Active and broader participation will only be achieved if exclusive power structures are opened up to all those they are supposed to serve.

7. Public service reform is best approached in partnership with a forward thinking workforce and the users to preserve and build upon all that is good about the public service ethos. Market forces don? give us all the answers.

8. There is no place for bigotry and discrimination in a modern society. All citizens should be equally valued and the legal protections available should guarantee this and make equality a reality.

9. Our links with the Trade Union movement are vital and should be strengthened. Labour should also reach out and be more open to all of civil society.

10. Labour's internal democratic structures need to be reinforced with a greater role for the membership in policy decisions than the flawed policy forum process has allowed.
