"WELCOME BUSH" @ LONDON

GO HOME BUSH and TAKE BLAIR WITH YOU

A This is London poll has shown that nearly two thirds of Londoners think it is the wrong time for President Bush to visit the UK.

ANTI-BUSH PROTESTERS GATHER

Until yesterday, 61-year-old Lindis Percy was an unknown peace activist and grandmother.

Today, with her picture on the front page of most papers, she is the symbol of a massive and diverse protest movement that has mobilised with the general aim of giving George Bush a bloody nose - in diplomatic terms, at least.

The Daily Telegraph, whose readership will be closest to Mrs Percy in age if not in anti-US sentiment, carries the largest and clearest photograph of the veteran protester who scaled the 20ft high gates of Buckingham Palace.

On the inside pages, columnist Mark Steyn vilifies the "peace crowd"for thinking "they know better than the ignorant natives (Iraqis) what's good for them" and warns the president to shield himself from the antics of irrational Brits such as Mrs Percy: "My advice to Bush is: make sure you know where the exit is and try to avoid eye contact."

Perhaps Mr Bush should also steer clear of the mayor of London, Ken Livingstone, who referred to the US president as "the greatest threat to life on this planet".

The Mail, which describes Mrs Percy as a "vicar's wife from Hull", is astounded at the ease with which she broke through Scotland Yard's "much vaunted 'ring of steel'."

She "simply strolled past the officers on guard" before climbing the gates and unfurling the Stars and Stripes bearing the slogan "Elizabeth Windsor and Co, he's not welcome", the paper said.

Fortunately for police, she turned out not to be a dangerous terrorist. But from now on, the Met will not be taking any chances. Officers will work 14,000 shifts between tonight and Friday to protect what the Mail refers to as the "pampered president".

More than 100,000 protesters are expected on the streets of London in that time, but few of them will be Labour voters. Despite the vociferous anti-US/Bush/war rhetoric of the left, a poll in the
Guardian shows that public opinion in Britain is overwhelmingly pro-American, with 62% of voters believing the US is "generally speaking a force for good, not evil", while 51% of Labour supporters
sat they back Mr Bush's state visit.

Majority backs Bush visit

Labour supporters?
