Kennedy spokeswoman Melissa Wagoner said: "Senator Kennedy has decided to decline to meet with Gerry Adams, given the IRA's ongoing criminal activity and contempt for the rule of law."

JFK's tea and IRA sympathy
_
President Kennedy's father may have served as FDR's ambassador to Britain, but that didn't stop another member of the Camelot clan from plotting to throw the English out of Ireland.
_
Whenever he was in Ireland, Kennedy liked to have a cup of tea with his second cousin Mary Kennedy Ryan, who lived in the family's humble ancestral home in Dunganstown, County Wexford. He visited her in 1947, while a rookie congressman, and again in 1963, as President.
_
But did he know that the sweet-looking lady offering him biscuits was an arms smuggler for the Irish Republican Army? Ryan had helped the IRA during its early armed resistance against the British occupation of Ireland, years before it began attacking civilians in the U.K., and she remained loyal to the movement.
_
"The IRA was her god," her daughter, Mary Ann Ryan, told author Thomas Maier in his book "The Kennedys: America's Emerald Kings."
_
"She took that feeling to the grave with her."
_
But, she adds, "I don't think [JFK] knew."
_
Local historian John W. Pierce told Maier, "I think the President was aware of his family's history. And I don't think he would have held it against Mrs. Ryan. She'd not have been an outcast like the current-day IRA people."
_
Their teas foreshadowed later relations between the Kennedys and the IRA. Bobby Kennedy's daughter Courtney married IRA convict Paul Hill. And his brother Sen. Ted Kennedy joined his sister Jean Kennedy Smith, Bill Clinton's ambassador to Ireland, in working with Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams to help craft the Good Friday Ageement of 1998.
